On the Web ... but Why?

If you don't want to do it on your web site, don't offer it as an option. This month's "web tale" involves a car repair shop that offers to talk with customers online ... but then telephones them instead.

For the complete story and more tips on small businesses using the web, please check out our Small Business section.

What good is the web if we can't have some fun with it?

From time to time, we'll share with you a web site that we think you might be interested in. It may be cool, unique, practical ... whatever catches our attention. And we hope you'll enjoy it too. And please be sure to share the sites you find with us!

SearchMe.com

Today's cool site is SEARCHME.COM Type in a search term and the websites, videos or images related to that search term are displayed. It's an easy way to preview pages before you actually go to the page. But that's just the beginning. Whether you're in website, video or image "mode," you can limit your search by selecting one of the icons labels (depending on the search term) "politicians," "movies," "libraries," "museums" and so on.

You can also create your own "stacks" ... that is, a collection of web sites of your choice. Select your favorite news sources, for example, for a quick perusal each morning. Create another stack to easily keep up with your competition's web sites. Be sure to download the Searchme toolbar for use with Firefox 2.0+ or Internet Explorer 6.0+.

Preferences are what you'd expect them to be for this kind of product. You can turn on|off an "adult content" filter. You can change the background of the search page. You may want to turn off "video autoplay" ... somewhat disconcerting when someone starts talking before you hit the "play" button.

And if you're a "do it yourself'er" when it comes to web design, you can even snag the code to include a mini-version on your web site. Please note: because this attempts to communicate with www.searchme.com via Flash, your customers may receive a browser security warning message. That's why we didn't include it here. Even without the mini-version, it's a fun site to visit.
